Why we need the First Amendment

Do you know what the real beauty of the First Amendment is? It allows total asshats who have somehow managed to acquire a public forum to show the world exactly what they are, be it stupid, bigoted, ignorant, or - in the case of alleged "comedian" turned "political commentator" Bill Maher - a combination of all of these wonderful character traits.

I'm neither Catholic nor a fan of organized religion. But this life support system for a sphincter, who probably hasn't had more than a dozen people at a time laugh at his shtick in at least a decade, is without a doubt one of the best arguments in favor of the First Amendment. After all, our country was founded on the tenet of free speech (that whole yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater thing being an exception). We need the First Amendment, and we need Bill Maher so that we can see exactly how important it is. The First Amendment is the GPS of the Constitution. It shows us where the stupid people are.
